Mesotherapy in Sports and Physical Medicine

Mesotherapy is a method that became popular due to its use in aesthetic medicine. However, what is less well known is that the concept of mesotherapy was developed by French physician Dr Michel Pistor, who introduced it in 1958 and established its fundamental principle: “a little, diluted, and in the right place.”

The first mesotherapy procedures in sports and physical medicine in Europe were introduced by Dr J. Le Coz as early as 1981 at the French National Institute of Sport (INSEP) in Paris.

Prof. Dr Branka Marković, after completing her specialisation in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, and gaining extensive experience in the application of mesotherapy, further expanded her expertise in 2018 during a study visit to Paris under the personal mentorship of Dr J. Le Coz. There, she advanced her knowledge of mesotherapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and sports injuries.

That same year, together with Prof. Dr Milan Aksić, she founded the Serbian Association for Clinical Mesotherapy, with Dr J. Le Coz serving as its Honorary President.

Through continuous medical education programmes for physicians from across the region, the use of this therapeutic procedure in physical and sports medicine began to expand both in Serbia and neighbouring countries.

Numerous training programmes organised for physicians throughout Serbia and the region, several of which featured Dr J. Le Coz himself as a guest lecturer, contributed to the wider adoption of this therapeutic procedure throughout the country.

Prof. Dr Branka Marković has also been a guest lecturer on several occasions at educational programmes organised by Dr J. Le Coz in Paris for physicians from around the world.

Mesotherapy has very few contraindications, is virtually painless, and is generally very comfortable for patients.

Our experience to date is consistent with international experience, indicating that this method may help in the treatment of painful conditions such as degenerative diseases, including knee osteoarthritis, as well as lumbar and cervical pain syndromes. It can also be successfully combined with physical therapy.
