Guna Collagen in Physical and Sports Medicine

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, accounting for approximately one-third of all proteins in our body. The name collagen itself comes from the Greek word “kolla”, meaning “glue”.

From around the age of 25, our body loses an average of 1% of its collagen each year, resulting in reduced elasticity and strength of tissues such as tendons, muscles, ligaments, and skin.

Why Collagen?

Excessive physical activity, ageing, and injuries can cause microscopic changes in our tissues, including the loss of the necessary parallel arrangement of collagen fibres and tissue damage. As a result, the affected tissues become less capable of withstanding stretching and mechanical stress, both during sports and everyday physical activities. This can lead to conditions such as tendon inflammation, muscle tears, cartilage damage, and other injuries.

I Don’t Like Injections – Why Isn’t Taking Collagen Orally Enough?

Damaged tissue undergoes a lengthy recovery process during which repair and restoration of the tissue to its original state involve the deposition and reorganisation of tissue components, primarily collagen.

When collagen is applied locally, directly to the area where it is most needed for tissue regeneration – whether a tendon, ligament, muscle, or cartilage – the regeneration process can be accelerated and recovery time shortened, helping the patient achieve faster relief from pain and loss of function associated with the injury.

Is the Procedure Painful and How Often Is It Repeated?

The procedure itself is no more painful than a mosquito bite. At our centre, we use extremely thin and short needles (just 4–12 mm), which, together with other pain-relief methods, makes the injection virtually painless.

Depending on the diagnosis, collagen is administered according to treatment protocols determined by your doctor.

We are proud to highlight that MI Medical is an educational centre for physicians in the application of GUNA collagen in physical and sports medicine, while our doctors also serve as European educators in the use of this treatment method.

Which Conditions Do We Most Commonly Treat with Collagen?

Used on its own or in combination with mesotherapy or PRP therapy, collagen can be a valuable treatment option for supporting and accelerating recovery in cases of:

1. Tendon inflammation (Achilles tendon, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, shoulder rotator cuff tendons, etc.)
2. Degenerative conditions (osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, and elbow)
3. Muscle tears
4. Fibromyalgia
5. Painful and swollen joints of the fingers and toes
6. Back and neck pain

GUNA collagen supports and accelerates the body’s natural tissue regeneration processes.
